Over 1 Crore Urban Homes Delivered Under PMAY-U Initiative

As of August 9, 2026, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) initiative in India has successfully completed and delivered more than 1 crore houses to beneficiaries across the country. This achievement reflects the government's commitment to addressing urban housing needs through a comprehensive approach that includes self-built homes, affordable housing projects, rental housing, and home-loan support. PMAY-U aims to empower families, particularly women, by ensuring that many homes are allotted in their names or through joint ownership arrangements.

The PMAY-U program is structured to support various housing solutions, with a total of 1.25 crore houses sanctioned as of the stated date. Among these, a significant number have been allocated to women, highlighting the initiative's focus on promoting gender equality in property ownership. The program's four verticals include Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH), and an Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS), each designed to cater to different segments of society.

Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC) provides financial assistance of up to Rs 2.5 lakh for economically weaker section (EWS) families looking to build homes on their own land. AHP supports EWS beneficiaries in purchasing homes in organized projects, while ARH focuses on providing rental accommodation for low-income individuals and families. The Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS) facilitates home loans for eligible households, making home ownership more accessible.

Under the PMAY-U initiative, digital monitoring has been integrated to enhance transparency and efficiency in the program's delivery. This includes a common platform connecting applicants, urban local bodies, and implementing agencies, allowing for real-time tracking of construction progress. The program has also increased women's participation in formal property ownership, with a reported 1 crore homes sanctioned to female heads of households or in joint ownership as of the latest data.

Looking ahead, PMAY-U 2.0 aims to support an additional 1 crore families through its ongoing initiatives until 2029.
