Adani Green Launches World's Largest Battery Energy Storage System in Gujarat
Adani Green Energy Ltd has successfully commissioned a 3.37 GWh battery energy storage system in Khavda, Gujarat, marking the largest single-location deployment outside China.

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has made a significant advancement in renewable energy infrastructure by commissioning the world’s largest single-site Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Khavda, Gujarat. This project boasts a cumulative capacity of 3.37 Gigawatt-hours (GWh), making it the largest deployment outside China. Remarkably, the completion of this project occurred within just ten months of the start of construction, highlighting AGEL's commitment to efficient renewable energy solutions. The newly commissioned BESS added 1.37 GWh of capacity in March 2026, bringing the total operational capacity at Khavda to 3.37 GWh. This facility can store enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes for an entire day, significantly contributing to grid reliability and peak-hour supply.
The project represents a crucial step towards enabling renewable energy to provide consistent and dependable power at scale. Mr. Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, emphasized the importance of large-scale energy storage in India's clean energy transition. He noted that as renewable energy capacity expands rapidly, robust storage infrastructure is critical to ensure reliable, round-the-clock clean power. The BESS at Khavda integrates advanced energy management systems with lithium-ion battery technologies to enhance efficiency and grid responsiveness.
AGEL's strategic investment in this BESS project aligns with its broader goal to achieve over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in FY27 and 50 GWh over the next five years. This initiative is part of AGEL's vision to develop the world's largest renewable energy plant at Khavda, aiming to reach 30 GW by 2029, with 9.9 GW already operational. The deployment of this BESS is expected to stabilize renewable-heavy grids and facilitate the transition to reliable green power. As global renewable energy adoption accelerates, utility-scale battery storage is becoming increasingly vital for addressing the variability in renewable energy output due to changing conditions.
AGEL's BESS project exemplifies how renewable power can evolve into dependable energy infrastructure. The commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in AGEL’s operational portfolio, certified as water positive, single-use plastic free, and zero waste-to-landfill, underscoring its dedication to sustainable growth in the clean energy sector.
